25th April 2001 Email sent to the national youth radio broadcaster TripleJ FM regarding their link at on their site to the Lawstuff site which contains faulty information. Triple J has been prominently promoting that site as a reliable resource for information across the nation.

I am concerned that you have a link from your site through your "cool sites" page to the "Lawstuff" website, which itself contains wrong and dangerous information about age of consent in Queensland (

They state erroneously:

"'Sexual relationships with someone of the same sex (homosexual sex)

both males have to be 18 or older. It is an offence for a male to have sex with another male who is less than 18 years. "

The law, since 1990, is actually that the age of consent in Queensland is equal at 16 for all men and women (gay or straight), but that no one under 18 may engage in anal intercourse (i.e. "penis into anus" sex).

There are many things that men can legally do as sex with other men when aged 16 to 18. Young men in Queenland need to be given accurate information on this matter. The consequences of misinformation are dire and numerous - including lack of sexual health education and services, lack of counselling support, lack of self-esteem, lack of community acceptance and support.

Yesterday I emailed Lawstuff to get them to amend their site, however I believe that because JJJ, the national youth broadcaster, has been so prominently promoting that site as a reliable resource (regardless of disclaimers) then you need to take action to ensure your listeners are informed of this error, or are given corrective information.

At the very least you should immediately remove the Lawstuff link until they have amended their information.

I am happy to discuss this matter at any time.

For the last 12 months I have been lobbying the Queensland Government to effectively inform the public about the true interpretation of our state's Age of Consent law. They refuse, saying that there are better things to spend money on! Yet, conservatively 80% of the population do not understand the law and probably believe the wrong information promulgated by Lawstuff and other misguided sources.
