13th August 2001 Letter from the office of Queensland Premier Peter Beattie in response to my 6th July 2001 letter requesting a personal meeting or a declaration of planned action. The letter merely concurs with the Attorney-General’s 22nd June 2001 statement of unwillingness to act.

Dear Mr Frame

Thank you for your letter of 6 July 200 concerning the age of consent. I have been requested to reply to you on the Premier’s behalf.

It is understood the Attorney-General has written to you advising that the Government has no plans to run an education campaign publicising the age of consent.

The Premier endorses the Attorney-General’s view that young people would be better served by being able to access appropriate advice from Community Legal Centres, instead of a general publicity campaign on the age of consent. As the Attorney-General notes Community Legal Centres can also talk to young people about their concerns and provide them with the appropriate referrals to other organisations that can help them.

In addition, many of these Centres also provide information on their websites for young people to access. As you will understand, the younger generation is very comfortable with this technology and it provides a very easy way for them to find out about issues such as the legal age of consent.

Again, thank you for drawing the Premier’s attention to this issue. The Premier is very committed to ensuring the safety and health of all our young people and will keep your views in mind if this issue is considered again.
