"Honest weekly talk, music and support."

·        (GO TO) a brief history of Queer Radio & Dykes On Mykes

What Queer Radio & Dykes On Mykes are about:

I believe there is no substitute for weekly local and live LGBT-specific community radio. Whether listeners are younger or older, it’s like having a friend you know and trust drop by for a damned good chat. We don’t waste any time justifying ourselves – we know we are “affirmatively moral, and virtuous, and right and desirable”. Veteran USA gay activist Frank Kameny says just that each week as part of our show’s intro.

Since 1978 4ZZZ has presented continuous programming in support of Brisbane region’s gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community. Dykes On Mykes is a dedicated women's space - while Queer Radio is male focused, yet fully inclusive. We aim to present particularly relevant music (both new and old) as well as studio guests, news, views and other interviews. Discussions include sex, sexuality and life in general.

Involvement in community groups and events is promoted and encouraged, as a great way of gaining self-confidence. People finding their feet and thinking of stepping out with their sexuality will find the shows particularly useful - but there’s often something for everyone. Persons of all ages, genders and locations can access this support with absolute discretion.

We know we are of special value to many listeners who are isolated from support through family circumstances, age or distance. It’s important that we are there as a reliable weekly service. I believe that it’s especially important for young people to hear that there is a wide world of acceptance open to them – and that they are not doomed to become stereotypes of any sort. Our teenage presenters Tim and James know first-hand the value of honest support for youth and they speak with confidence, straight from the heart.

Participation in the studio is welcome, with the presentation of the show being a social occasion in itself.  - 4ZZZ's studio at 291 St. Paul's Terrace, Fortitude Valley, is a safe and drug-free place, close to transport and good coffee shops.

I encourage anyone to be active in ensuring that their local community radio presents a gay support program. A great asset to programming could be the weekly half-hour world news and current affairs program from www.thiswayout.org . The show can be downloaded from the internet or from “ComRadSat” the Australian community radio satellite system.

We welcome sponsorship by businesses which are proud to be aligned in support of our community.
