My brother took me to see Placebo for the first time
last Sunday – and I was absolutely impressed. They had the good grace and
good taste to invite Elbow
to tour with them as support, so the audience was treated to the highest
calibre of contemporary musical performance.
I wondered how good Placebo must be to confidently
present Elbow as support, but soon realised that Placebo have
big-stage show business down to a fine art. With two extra and very talented
musicians to supplement their basic trio, they did everything possible from
their CD’s - and more - in a spectacular looking and powerfully uplifting
main set, plus two encores (featuring an extraordinary reworking of “Taste In
Men”).
Superbly engineered sound also made the Placebo
/ Elbow concert (my first trip to the Convention Centre) a highly
memorable occasion – decidedly one of the best rock/pop concerts I’ve
attended (and I’m talking Elvis
Costello, Iggy Pop, Roxy
Music, Spilt Enz, Devo,
Rolling Stones…).
There were some empty seats in the house on Sunday
night – and that’s just crazy, so don’t miss any future chance to see Placebo
in full flight on their own terms. See the DVD to find out why:- |
The “Soulmates Never Die” DVD, recorded on this tour in Sounding just as good as it looks too – and
giving audiences who enjoyed the privilege of an “intimate” version of their show, a larger
than life experience of their big stadium gala - packed to the rafters with
16,000 fans who are 100% behind the band. You're left in no doubt that these guys love their band, and their audience. |
