Kristy Apps

Sunshine coast singer/songwriter/guitarist Kristy Apps has performed extensively on Australia’s east coast, playing Sydney’s Mardi Gras fair day as well as this year’s Brisbane Pride rally and excellent supports for international acts (including Sonia). She has played solo at venues such as Brisbane Powerhouse, The Zoo, and the Frankston Entertainment Centre - Melbourne, as well as events such as 4ZZZ Market Day and the RiverFest (Olympics 2000) with her band. The Bluehouse

Melbourne based folk/pop women, who have performed locally and overseas for several years to increasing acclaim. Their new album "6 minutes of Breathable Air" refers to how cramped their home studio is – and the CD sounds great. All of the songs are written with non-gender specific lyrics, so you just have to know they’re proud to be lesbian and read that in. Their story is included in "Inside Out – a Collection of Australian Coming Out Stories" (Edited by Erin Shale 1999 Bookman Press, Melbourne).

CD: "6 Minutes Of Breathable Air" (2001, through Shock Records)

Monique Brumby

A fiercely independent musician who refused to lick Sony Music’s boots when picked up as a burgeoning, talented young artist.  Slightly older and wiser, Monique is touring to promote her independently released 2002 CD “Signal Hill”. Her hot band, The Riders, are as fiery on CD as they are on stage. Her single “As Sweet As You Are” is available as a free download from her site and reflects the encouragement given by her grandmothers, to be true to herself.

Paul Capsis (read 2001 interview transcript)

One of Australia’s most diversely talented artists as stage performer, film actor and occasional television presenter– but acknowledged as being truly outstanding in cabaret. Paul has a magnificent voice which is certainly best appreciated in person, but can also be savoured in rare tracks such as his styling of the Marcia Hines classic “Without You” (Groovescooter’s “Refashioned” CD, 2001) and in duet with Mark Trevorrow (2004 CD +DVD “It’s About Time”).

Chop Suey Joint

A multi-artist project by Valencia, Spain based musician Jon Knowles who is a young Brisbane-boy veteran of alternative music (guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, producer – bands such as The Ruling Class, Gone To Ground, The Judges, Planet X etc). Chop Suey Joint is richly Spanish flavoured techno hip-hop. Jon is keen to have this music released on CD, but is equally happy to use it as a promotional vehicle for his talents as a producer and engineer of music for media.

Music produced from 2003 to 2005 is free as complete downloads via website (different songs available on rotation)

Jacob Diefenbach (watch Jacob's 13th Sept '06 Queer Radio studio interview -  7 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9s1VKyVsTc )

Resident in Brisbane, but raised by a very loving family in the rural/regional/industrial town of Gladstone (where traditional “family values” rule). Jacob is almost intimidatingly talented as a lyricist, composer and producer - but when you meet him you know that he's unflinchingly honest and totally lacking in pretence.  He seems to hold little back, and is oblivious to what many others would consider "risky" material.

Jacob is not formulaic - each of his songs is a major exploration of the human experience and a refreshingly intriguing journey into the possibilities of arrangement and production. The nearest persona and talent analogy would be Rufus Wainwright - but neither of them could do their own songs better.

Debut CD: "Ripping Stories For Boys” (independent release September 2006 available through CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/diefenbach )

Peter Hicks

Proudly gay Queensland born and raised political activist and singer/songwriter. Peter shows that just being glad to be gay is not enough. First release cassingle "The Man With The Pink Triangle" was one of my nephews favourite songs!

Pixie works in clubs, pubs, venues and private functions right across the country and overseas and also tours as an accomplished backing musician or support artist when asked to by some of the legends of the national and international music scene.”

CD’s: “Pixieland” (1993); “The Travelling Showmen” (2000); “True Blue Classics” (2000) and with John Williamson and Warren H Williams on the 2003 CD and DVD “Mates On the Road”.

Manzuma

Brisbane’s Tim Fairless and Vanessa Cronin combine to produce a very powerful, detailed and polished sound - drawing particularly on Eastern influences. “Inside The Serpent Skin” deserves to be heard loud – which is no effort at all thanks to Tim’s expert production.

Pauline Pantsdown / Little Johnny /real name: Simon Hunt (See Review)

Following the success of Pauline Pantsdown with hit singles "Backdoor Man" and "I Don’t Like It", Simon Hunt’s new incarnation "Little Johnny" of Sorryland, presents the CD single "I’m Sorry". Released 8th August 2000 and hopefully auguring a new direction in Federal politics.

Sue-Ann Post
Australia’s favourite six-foot, ex-mormon, lesbian, diabetic comedian and writer. Sue-Ann presents a superbly entertaining show of stand-up/sit-down comedy in which she shares the joy and trials of her own life – and, when appropriate, those of her family. High in honestly and imbued with integrity. Hear Sue-Ann read her coming out story (6mins, 2mb)  from the book “Inside Out(edited by Erin Shale, Bookman Press, Melbourne 1999)

Margret RoadKnight
“She has sung blues, jazz, gospel, folk, comedy, and social commentary songs in concert halls and cathedrals, clubs and campuses,
from Broome to Hobart, Beijing to Memphis, Paris to Auckland, Edinburgh to Tel Aviv, New York to Seoul, Amsterdam to Dublin, New Orleans to London, Vancouver to Nuku'alofa.”  Margret has a voice and verve which more than match her physical stature. She’s a Brisbane resident, but Melbournian at heart. Like her music, Margret is not into labels, but says she cannot understand why anyone would want to claim the ultimately limiting identity of “straight”.

The Sailors
Formed in 1995 these Melbourne “pirates of men’s pants” or “swashbuckling faggots” may have a one–track collective mind, but they have many ways of expressing their enthusiasm in the process. With musical styles complimenting Johnny Cash and The Cramps, it’s the live feel, unashamed lyrics and great production that make them much more than just amusing. They got their start playing several University “Battle of the Bands” from which came their first recording, the 7” vinyl single “Teenage Homosexual Blues”
CD’s: “ Failure, Depression, Suicide” (2003), “Turning The Other Cheek” (2002), “Violent Masturbation Blues” (2000)

Strong Australian music, with notable lesbian influence, performed by a combination of talented men and women. Past members of Bughouse, Five Girls + Guitars, Falling Joys, Clouds. Cindy & Genevieve have performed at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival. Overseas Artists:

Ricardo Alvarado

From the serene island of Puerto Rico to the dangerous streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn; from singing in the church choir to wowing the hippest of the downtown crowds, singer, songwriter and producer RICARDO ALVARADO has always been a man with a mission. Ricardo immigrated to the U.S. from Puerto Rico in 1966 with his mother, six brothers and a sister. He immediately got hooked on Motown, and with his high voice, began imitating the likes of the Stylistics and Diana Ross, all the while planning his career in music.

D. C.  Anderson

Coupled with a desire to entertain, I believe a cabaret artist chooses songs that either support his or her world view outright or present someone in the process of a discovery which could lead to a similar conclusion. I have a fondness for children and strong ideas about the art of facilitating their growth, an interest in peace, a concern for our environment, a desire to explore unconditional love (where does romance fit in?), belief in a higher power...I want an audience to explore these things with me...They have chosen to be in my company. They either consider us to be on similar wave lengths or are willing to be challenged by my notions.”  - Cabaret singer, lyricist and actor David Cameron Anderson.

Antony & The Johnsons

Musically, their sound is really simplistic: just three string players, a bass guitar and drums. But listening to Antony's voice is like hearing Elvis for the first time: two words and he has broken your heart... when he sings it is the most exquisite thing that you will hear in your life." - Laurie Anderson (from The Times, London, U.K. September 29th, 2001). On the widely acclaimed  “I Am A Bird Now”, Antony also features on piano and organ – and esteemed guests contribute, including Laurie’s partner Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright and Boy George.

John Ashfield (See Review)

Nick Lowe fans will feel instantly at home. Attractive and accessible guitar based pop music from San Francisco. Produced with Chris Xefos from King Missile and with a guest appearance by Patrick Goodwin of Pansy Division. The CD gets off to a great start with 3 strong tracks – including "Crush" as my favourite and a fine candidate for being a hit single.

CD: "Harmony Bunny" (2002 Pop2 Records) (the CD also features an mpeg video for the animated guitar solo "Harmony Bunny")

B52’s

Not all gay but certainly all gay friendly, and one of the most dynamic and powerful live bands ever to perform in Brisbane. They were the first act to insist on "Dancing Room Only" instead of seating on the floor of Brisbane’s Festival Hall (the Wild Planet Tour 1980). When they returned with the Cosmic Thing Tour ten years later, the whole sold-out audience danced in unison – it was a moving experience! They continue to rock – playing the Atlanta Pride 2000 and other shows. Valentine’s Day 2002 saw the performance celebration of their silver jubilee. In September 2006 the B52’s start recording their first new album in a long time (though they’ve always kept in live performance practice) – they plan to tour in support of that album in early 2007.

Ray "MusicBear" Baker

Ray’s website will tell you he plays clubs, cafés, concert venues, festivals and karaoke bars – and he has a song to suit each occasion. His CD "Dance MusicBear" is well produced, easily enjoyable and classically-styled original doof, with just a sprinkling of cheese. Ray is a proud gay bear singing "Teddy Bear" and "Homophobia" for other cubs and bears.

bobbyblue
Since moving from Indiana to New York early a few years ago, bobbyblue is having the time of his life – performing and creating: My mother loved the music she grew up with in Costa Rica, and my father loved his old-fashioned country music. I never guessed that I would end up exploring their music: most of my life I’ve focused on pop and dance. Always looking out to find something on my own, I could never see the supremely beautiful melodies right in front of me. Now I’m re-creating old Spanish love/folk/spiritual songs from the 1800s and early 1900s, but blended with my own mix of contemporary style.”

Scott Bolton
Canadian born and raised – and like Mr Scott Free, classically beefcake in appearance. This Scott is Broadway trained (via “Cats”) and keen to sing and dance his life away on the party show circuit. The CD is more likely to succeed with patrons who see him perform live –  or with those who want to hear a happily gay man sing full-tilt disco renditions of the likes of Kiss, Jigsaw and Vanilla Fudge.

Namoli Brennet
“Intense.Passionate. Intelligent. Poetic. These are a few words that describe the genre-busting folk music of Namoli Brennet. A self-made artist who has released 3.5 independent albums in just under 2 years, Brennet is as hard working as she is prolific.”

David Brown (See Review)

Honest, detailed lyrics, energetic melodic vocals (like Jon Anderson, but with every word being relevant). Songs on life from a very personal and yet equally accessible point of view. David has returned to the studio in 2006 and plans to release an album of new material in 2007.

Bill Budd

“Bill is a singer-songwriter with a powerfully pure voice. New wave, electronica, and folk influences filter through his songs creating a sharp yet dreamy indie-pop sound. Bill attended the Performing Arts High School of Philadelphia and the University of the Arts and has performed Off-Broadway. He formed the band Cold Son in 1995 and continues performing and writing with them today. Bill is a member of OUTMUSIC. When he isn't touring or recording he's directing or designing sound for live theatre.”

Buzzcocks featuring Pete Shelley

Power pop assisted by Shelley’s openly homo-oriented lyrics and distinctive vocals. Performed live in the UK transgender-themed film "Different For Girls". A relatively recent favourite is "Palm of Your Hand" from "Trade Test Transmissions".

Kevin Cahoon and Ghetto Cowboy

Kevin Cahoon and Ghetto Cowboy are one of NY's most buzzed about new bands, having sold-out shows at such legendary NY venues as Irving Plaza, CBGB's, Don Hill's, Ars Nova, among others. The New York Times, The NY Blade, Time Out and other NY publications have heralded their music as something exciting and fresh on the pop culture landscape. Pooling their inspiration from punk to glitter rock to country and soul, their music has something to say.” This is a great sounding, consistent, energy-filled album in a very attractive CD package. With style that’s reminiscent of Ziggy Stardust and with Kevin looking very much like a younger Iggy Pop, it’s no surprise to learn that Kevin has played the stage lead in Hedwig.

Chaz

From Illinois, USA. Fully self-produced music with lyrics strongly influenced by Chaz’s personal questioning of religion. As per his website: “Chaz classifies his songs in the "Reality" genre due to their strong, honest and meaningful lyrics. However, there are many sub-genres that are represented on his CD. Some are very pop oriented. Others are soulful and melodic.”

Chumbawamba

One of the most important, erudite and entertaining groups in the world. Anti-homophobic, pro-queer/transgender. They prove that politics can sit very comfortably in popular & alternative music. Several CD’s to choose from (my favourite is "Anarchy") - all great entertainment and valuable documents. Their singles always feature extra tracks that make them well worth owning, as well as the albums. More than just Tubthumpers!

The Cramps (See Review)

Despite logos depicting discipline, devilry and skeletons - rather than being into death, The Cramps duo Lux and Ivy say they are very much into "blood-boiling life". As husband and wife they are the ideal queer family – where attitude, not sexuality, is the issue. They’ve produced some of the most powerful rock and rockabilly ever - and are astounding live. Their last tour to Brisbane (for the "Flamejob" CD), accompanied Harry Drumdini and Slim Chance, proved they are still possessed with ample vigour and aggression. 2002  was their silver jubilee year. In April 2003 they released their first album in 5 years with tracks set to stun including “She’s Got Balls “ and “Jesus Fucking Christ!”.

Deep-Dickollective (See review)

Four very talented wordsmith gay activist artists and their friends, telling the truth – especially about being black, gay and into hiphop. Their CD contains 20 pages worth of lyrics and each song is a gem. Approachable, challenging and rewarding stuff. "The fag has entered and the cypher is stalled. The anti-gangster aesthetic of quasi-Nationalist "conscious" hip-hoppers and bohemian MC thrift shoppers pave a space for D/DC to articulate its word play. They represent a political lyricism that does not take itself too seriously. They are the brave mavericks of a movement that some affectionately refer to as homo-hop. They are Oxymoronic "out" black queer Emcees the world says do not exist. They are the rumblings of a revolution that have for too long been silenced. Overstand? It's not that deep."

KJ Denhert

With an individual vocal style in the same class and strength as Joan Armatrading – and a band of superb musicians:- “ New York native, KJ calls her music Urban Folk and Jazz though it is rooted in Funk and R & B. "The Jazz", she explains, "comes from people's perceptions of my guitar voicings and the structure of the tunes themselves... using extended solos and the players working off of each other. Urban reflects my childhood, growing up in NYC, and Folk, I really adored James Taylor, my first guitar influence, and I use acoustic guitar in my songwriting and live shows, as opposed to many years touring as a lead guitarist."

D’Geyrald

D’Gey is a young French performance musician/artist, formerly of boyband “G.Squad”. Now that boybands no longer rule the Earth, D’Gey is seeking his fortune as a solo artist. “C Mon Seul Espoir” is a lot more like lounge music than I expected – quite laid back and mellow. He speaks confidently in interviews about his sexuality and in the “hidden track” at the very end of the CD, D’gey sings (in English) of his last love affair, which was with a man.

CD: 2004 single: “You’re My Man” (by D’Geyrald & Tane’O) available as vinyl or download from www.symbamusic.com Album: “C Mon Seul Espoir” (2002 Symba Music Corporation)

Michael DeMontagnes

Young Pennsylvanian singer/songwriter making his recording debut with this EP. The three songs are immediately appealing, even more so on second listening. The extremely effective production on all four tracks plus the cohesive and varied musical arrangement also made the second listening something I was looking forward to. Musician and producer collaborator Dave Gerhart certainly has style to go with his talent. And Michael’s  vocals are rich, confident and appealing. There's also evident enthusiasm in both music and voice that should win hearts.

Sarah Dougher

In mid 2002 Sarah popped into 4ZZZ (unannounced) for a chat. During her interview she totally charmed Ari and Lorena, casually mentioning that she was in Out Magazine’s “Out 100” for the year 2000. Sarah has an unapologetically original style and smart lyrics. She says the production on “The Bluff” is noticeably richer than the raw sounding “The Walls Ablaze”, but you’ll find they both have strong appeal. Sarah’s welcome back any time. - “Due to be finished in the fall of 2003, for a spring 2004 release, Sarah’s new CD project consists of a cycle of 24 songs that explore and document Sarah’s continued interest and engagement with the afterlife of Homer's Odyssey. Sarah explores the themes of home/homecoming, mythical landscape, frontier, outsider, family, gender and war. Many guests will appear on the record, including Neil Gust (No.2, ex-Heatmiser), Aubree Brenier-Clark, (Half Seas Over) and Heather Larimer (ex-Jicks).”

Matthew Duffy

Matthew Duffy is infusing popular music with a new sound that just might provide a much needed jolt to the radio airwaves. Steadily gaining worldwide recognition, this "Electro Pop" as fans have termed it, combines old school flava house with acoustic and electric guitars, eastern instrumentation, mega harmonies, electro madness and some really strong pop melodies. "I want my music to take audiences away. To give them the strength to be anything they want to be. My songs are extremely personal but I hope listeners can relate the messages to their own lives and that it serves their needs as well."

Skott Freedman (See Review)

Winner of the www.outmusic.com Award in 2002 as "Outstanding New Recording – Male" for "Anything Worth Mentioning". Has a superb voice – with a fine yodel (his label is "Violent Label Records") and very tasteful production and arrangements. Skott is also an outspoken bisexual activist, often invited to lecture at university campuses while touring.  “Biphobia” is an unreasonable fear suffered by many in both gay and straight subcultures around the globe.

CD’s: “Judge A Book” (2005) (a collection of tasteful, mostly alternative, covers); "Anything Worth Mentioning" (2002); "Swimming After Dark" (1999) available via his website and www.cdbaby.com

Stephen Fry

Stephen has an outstanding ability for composing and presenting the spoken word. "I take immense trouble with words... For me it is to engage the reader, often just to make them thrill at the bounce and the rhythm and the slurp of it all." Observer Magazine, March 27, 1994. (excerpt from the site below). On Queer Radio we have used several excerpts from Stephen’s autobiography on cassette "Moab Is My Washpot" as well as his essays "Paperweight (1 & 2)" . I had the honour and pleasure of an exclusive interview with Stephen for Queer Radio in February 2001 (read an excerpt: www.queerradio.org/FryQueerRadio4ZZZ.htm)

Sandra Grace

New York resident songwriter/producer/ performing & recording artist. Richly produced with honest emotive lyrics. Sandra says of her debut eponymous CD that ”three of my songs, produced by Grammy nominee Paul Avgerinos, have been informally crowned "best lovemaking music" by the dyke community here in NYC.” - however “Do You Have A Lover (bad New Yawk accent remix)” is a fine female perspective compliment to Wayne G’s 90’s dancefloor epic “Twisted”. Sandra’s recording career is off to a great start.

Charles Green (a.k.a. Happy Charles) (See Review)

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, (but with friends in Brisbane), Charles works happily by day in the studio with artists such as Garth Brooks and develops his own music career in his spare time – in close collaboration with producer Jan Pulsford (Cyndi Lauper, Thompson Twins). Charles’ lyrics inspire both joy and confidence and the production is first class. Even his version of "These Boots (are made for walking)" will impress you. Rally theme "Wear Your Pride" and "Be Yourself" are honest celebrations of gay identity. With the album “Oxygen & Love” (2005) we find Charles embracing emotive ballads rather than dance – and with arrangements highlighting the quality and strength of his voice (as well as his lyrical talent).

CD‘s: “Oxygen & Love” (2005), “The Christmas Dream” (2002)(both through www.cdbaby.com); “Pride 2001” (Centaur Music compilation including “Wear Your Pride” by Happy Charles), CD single: “Sittin’ On Santa’s Lap” (2002 Collecting Dust)

Rob Halford

Rob’s successful solo career in heavy metal after leaving Judas Priest is a testament to the anti-stereotypical and non-judgmental nature of metal fans. Rob still rocks – but on his own terms. He has even joined Pansy Division on stage to sing their adaptation of "Breaking The Law" ("the sodomy law") (San Diego Gay Pride, 26th July ’97).

Most recent CD’s: "Resurrection" (2000) & "Live Insurrection" (2001)

Magdalen Hsu-Li

Asian American Magdalen presents a collection of carefully produced ballads with a sense of spiritual purpose in "Fire". Subjects include a tribute to Matthew Shepard ("Laramie") and "Mother" in which she tells of the futility of a mother’s well-meaning, but racist and overcautious warnings. The album is mostly uplifting however and the hidden extra track is the pick of the bunch. The recording earned the 2002 www.outmusic.com award for "Outstanding Producer".

Jesse Hultberg

Jesse Hultberg is from New York, lived briefly in San Francisco, and now resides in Paris. Great voice, beautiful guitar and incisive original lyrics & music. Mark Islam (See Review)

"Mark Islam creates distinctive songs by blending elements of country, rock, folk & pop -- always with melodies that stick with you. Lyrically, he has an affinity for stories that tap into deeper truths, and like any good story, you'll want to hear his songs over and over again. The new CD, THE FINE PRINT, is a concept album based on observations of life in Los Angeles. Part journalist, part introspective troubadour, Mark Islam aims his pen at the flip side of celebrity and success." (from Mark’s new website as linked below)

John-Fredrick

Quote from "In Touch": "A must for club DJs & alternative music fans. This surprising new EP packs plenty of attitude, from post-punk slam to disco. John-Fredrick, the Radical Faerie anarchist rock-diva act-up disco punk wonder boy has grown his hair & grown up musically. Wisely, this idiom surfing still allows much room for his former rebel bad boy spunk."

** Eurovision 2006 finalist with “Every Song Is A Cry For Love”

Ireland’s much loved and highly acclaimed vocalist, musician, producer and musicologist. Brian has a strong reputation for integrity as a great performing artist, with several top selling CD albums and a renewed contract to produced a further 6 part BBC TV series of “Brian Kennedy On Song”. He is proud to be open and honest regarding his gay sexuality, especially in support of queer youth - who are much in need of societal role models. In Ireland, he says, it’s rare enough to hear any “out of wedlock” sex being discussed, let alone positive things about queerdom. Brian has a truly fine counter-tenor voice, and great skill as a producer and musical arranger. He has collaborated with numerous acclaimed artists, as well having performed in Riverdance on Broadway for a full year. He lives in picturesque surrounds in rural County Tipperary. In 2004 Brian’s first novel was published – the fictional romantic drama “The Arrival Of Fergal Flynn” draws on some of Brian’s own life experiences – including his music and his gayness. Fergal’s adventures continue in “Roman Song” (Hodder Headline, Oct 2005). Brian represented Ireland in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest (finishing in tenth place) with “Every Song Is A Cry For Love”. That song also appears on the 2006 CD “Homebird” – which features one great new song after another and is both inventively and beautifully produced.

Most recent CD’s: “Interpretations” (2008)  “Homebird” (2006)  Curb Records www.curb.com ) also highly recommended are the DVD and 2CD versions of “Live In Belfast” (2004)

Jeff Krassner

Wonderful, positively gay nightclub-style songs. Dusty's signature "Son of a Preacher Man" is a treat, here sung aggressively by a male. Krassner's own compositions are also impressive, especially "Lovin' You Is a Natural Thing", "I Hear Angels Sing" and the title track "Strong For You".
