Review:

Safe Sex

On opening night, 22nd November 2001, I went to see "Safe Sex" (a set of 3 one act plays by Harvey Fierstein) at the New Farm NASH Theatre, Balfour Street, New Farm - as part of AIDS Awareness week.(http://members.ozemail.com.au/~docwhite/nash/safe_sex.htm).

It's entertaining and the messages are certainly relevant, even though the plays were written several years ago (in 1987). These days we should all know that a wild sex life is only marginally limited by reducing the risk of HIV transmission to virtually nil.

In the first and shortest play when one character asks "do you kiss?" - just have it in your head that he means "do you KISS?" - because he knows that when you really passionately kiss, there's no limit to what you want to have happen next.

The second play presents a literally see-sawing look at communication and understanding within relationships - and, for the voyeur in us all, this play also features a wonderful set of thighs. Both actors are articulate, poised and funny - they enjoy themselves. It's guaranteed to make you laugh.

The third play is a little slow to start, but becomes very poignant. You'll not only enjoy the evening but also have good reason to talk honestly about sex afterwards.

Safe Sex runs to 8th December.
